The chicken wing is one of the most common causes of slicing.

Chicken-winging refers to the chicken-wing appearance of the arms during the follow through when a golfer starts the downswing incorrectly from the top-down, starting with a shoulder turn that causes an outside-in clubhead swing path through the impact zone. The beginner golfer, who starts the downswing with an over the top right shoulder movement, pushes through the shot with his right upper body, and this causes the left arm to collapse at impact. Also, when the beginner golfer realizes that his arm follow through swing path is going to be too inwards (under his left armpit) and result in a pulled shot, he sometimes redirects the follow through of his arms towards the target so that the left arm stays much higher than the right arm, and very bent at the left elbow joint - exaggerating the chicken-wing appearance of the left arm in the follow through. Both arms usually chicken-wing (slight bend at both elbows). In a proper golf swing both arms should be fully extended in the follow through.

The chicken wing often occurs from a weak grip that allows the clubface to open during the backswing and remain open in the downswing. The club cuts to the left across the body because the player is worried about hitting a slice right, and as a result the left elbow--the "chicken wing"--comes up high and the arms never get released.

It is really a chain reaction with the links being lack of understanding, a lack of confidence, tension, and trying too hard. If you stop the rotation of your body prior to impact your arms will swing past your chest. The left arm and wrist will lift and fold resulting in the dreaded chicken wing! If you chicken-wing the shot, you'll hit a ball that starts left and goes right, with no power.

Unfortunately there is a lot of well-intended instruction out there that has so much focus on positions and moves. It is no wonder why so many golfers can't hit the ball solid, and stay confused and tense. Trying to recreate an exact position in the swing, in and of itself causes tension and trying.

The entire focus of my book is "feeling" a swing regardless of where you are at any particular point in the swing.

A feeling is so much easier to repeat than a position. If you truly swing the club, centrifugal force will keep the club on plane and on line with no intervention needed from you. You don’t need to flip the wrists or try to pull the ball to get it on line. Wrist cock and weight transfers naturally when you make the right moves.

A true swing gets the ball headed toward the target with tremendous height, allowing the ball to land softly on the green. This type of swing is easy to learn once you understand what you are trying to do. You will have a much better understanding of your swing, so you are able to hit the golf ball solid time after time and maintain your swing yourself.

You will no longer be tempted to chase the latest theories on how to hit it longer and straighter. "Your swing" will be your longest and straightest, and you will understand why.

If there is any secret to the swing that just is not understood, or at least not taught in a way that is easily understandable, it is how to use centrifugal force to your advantage in creating your natural swing. I will unlock this door for you. It will have a positive affect on every aspect of your game from putting to driving, and every thing in between.
